Socrates: In Memoriam



Yesterday, December 5th, 2011, one of the greatest and most controversial football players passed away. To the world, he was known as Socrates.



A medicine graduate, he started his career in the Brazilian team of Botafogo SP. He quickly rose to prominence and became one of the most beloved players of the team. He then moved to Corinthians and joined the Brazilian national football team.



Socrates was an active person who had six children and wrote extensively in newspapers; his articles were not only about sports but also about politics and economics. He earned his medical degree while playing football at a professional level and practised his profession after retiring. Pele named him as one of the 125 top living fotballers.



However, he had severe problmes with alcohol and drugs. His health began to deteriote fast several years ago; he died of complications coming from his unfortunate addictions. At the time of his death, he was in the process of writing a fiction book about the coming World Cup in Brasil in 2014.

  1. I feel lucky to watch 1982 & 1986 glimses of his touch football & I can surely say he was splendid with zico as his partner. Really a great loss for the world football.
