Federer is just one of the several professional players striving to win this tournament. Apart from hopping to win his 22nd title in the ATP Master 1000, he is also striving to keep up his performance and even improve on it in order to stay at the top of the professional players. Even now at this moment, he is playing against Stanislav Wawrinka who is fairing well against Federer, taking the first set 6-4 for him. And even the second set is seemingly tipping towards Wawrinka wininng.
