Why is football soccer in the US??

red is soccer
blue is football
green - disputed

Or simply why do we call the same sport with 2 different names? As you know in the US football means something comletely different from what we mean by football. And soccer? Well soccer is only called in the Americas. At first, since the creation of written football rules, the game's name was football. Back then, the organisation in England (the home of football) was called Football Association (1863). However after the sport became extremely famous, many people of non-English nations started calling the sport soccer, coming from the short-name of the Football ASSOCiation. While this was happening, USA was gaining strenght in sports. The americans called their rugby "football", because of the part where you get to kick the ball with your foot. The original name however remained in England, and the rest of the non-english-speaking countries. However in Austria, USA and Canada (as well as few more) the name became soccer. Check the picture for modern usages of football for football.
